Finland to participate in the World Cosplay Summit

Finland will participate for the first time in the World Cosplay Summit (WCS),
the world championships for cosplay. Cosplay Finland Tour (CFT), along with its
partners, will host the official Finnish qualifying competition. The winner will
represent Finland in the WCS 2009 finals in Nagoya, Japan. Both the qualifying
and final competitions will consist of two people groups performing in cosplay
costumes. The winning group must show their skills in costume making,
performance on stage and in faithfulness to the original story.

The WCS Finnish qualifying is a part of the Helsinki Book Fair 2008 programme
and will be held in the Helsinki Fair Centre on Saturday October 25th, starting
at 12 midday. The winning group will be announced at 15:00 on the same day.
Participating in the qualifying is free of charge, and open to all Finnish
cosplayers. Pariticipating requires advance registration on the CFT website.
Both the qualifying and award ceremonies are open to the audience visiting the
Helsinki Book Fair.

The winning group will be awarded by Finnair with a two person, one week trip to
Nagoya, Japan, for the finals to be held in August 2009. In addition, well
performing groups will be awarded with gift certificates from Egmont Kustannus
and Sinooperi. All groups participating in the qualifying competition will also
receive diplomas awarded by CFT and the Helsinki Book Fair.

Alongside with the WCS 2009 qualifyings, CFT will also host a cosplay show
series at the same event. The show series will allow all cosplayers to show
their costumes on stage without the pressures of competition.

Background information

Cosplay, short for "costume play", is a type of performance art whose
participants outfit themselves, with often-elaborate costumes and accessories,
as a specific character. Cosplay participants ("cosplayers") form a subculture
centered around wearing their costumes and reenacting scenes or inventing likely
behavior inspired by their chosen sources. (Wikipedia)

Cosplay Finland Tour is a non profit Finnish organization, which has hosted and
arranged several cosplay competitions in Finland since 2006. CFT is based on
voluntary work and the support from many partners.

The World Cosplay Summit began in the fall of 2003, with the concept that
cosplayers play a leading role in introducing Japanese manga and animation
through the visual renderings of Japan and Japanese manga characters to people
around the world. At the same time, it is also partly for people in Japan, so as
not to take for granted the treasured things that exist around us. In the 2008
finals, groups from 13 countries participated, with the number set to increase
for 2009. (TV-Aichi)
